TheraKey is a clinical tool designed to enhance the documentation and exploration process within therapy sessions. It facilitates the digital recording, storage, and quick retrieval of case notes, integrating this functionality with a comprehensive set of structured questions aimed at deepening client understanding and therapeutic effectiveness.

It offers several practical benefits, including aiding clients in making sense of their experiences, enriching the therapy process for both clinician and client, and automating the collection of client data for effortless download and reference. The software provides straightforward access to case notes and EMDR session records, enabling seamless switching between documentation types during sessions.

Developed with an emphasis on usability, TheraKey modernizes traditional note-taking methods by allowing clinicians to back up and retrieve case notes efficiently. Its question framework systematically captures responses that are automatically propagated into related follow-up questions. Client answers are promptly saved and organized for easy future access.

Beyond record-keeping, TheraKey incorporates research-based questions rooted in contemporary understanding of memory and change processes. Conceived by William M. Zangwill, Ph.D., and Cindy Browning, LCSW, and inspired by the pioneering work of Dr. Francine Shapiro on EMDR, the tool provides a structured means to facilitate clients’ access to their associative memories. This approach promotes more nuanced exploration and potentially improves therapeutic outcomes.

The platform recognizes that emotional memories are encoded multifacetedly—comprising sensory impressions, thoughts, emotions, and physiological responses. Traumatic or impactful experiences often leave residual visual images, sounds, smells, along with negative cognitions such as “I’m not good enough” or “I can’t handle this.” These memories are stored with emotional charge and bodily sensations. To enable clients to gain insight into their issues, therapists need to evoke these memories vividly across all dimensions—something TheraKey aims to support effectively.

Furthermore, TheraKey emphasizes the interconnectedness of past, present, and future experiences. With tools like the Float Back and Float Forward procedures, clinicians can guide clients in establishing links between their histories, current challenges, and future concerns—connections that might not have previously been apparent. This multidimensional inquiry approach enhances traditional methods by offering a richer perspective akin to viewing in three-dimensional color rather than monochrome.
